For animal lovers, living with a pet is a way of life. Whether you love birds, cats, or dogs, animals bring a joy into our lives that can’t be matched by friends and family. Thankfully, individuals who live in pet friendly apartments have the ability to enjoy their furry (or feathery) friends all the time. While it is sometimes difficult to share an indoor space with your beloved pet, it doesn’t always have to be. In today’s post, we’ll give you three tips for apartment living with pets in small or medium-sized spaces.

Stay Clean

One of the keys to successfully living in an apartment with is keeping your rental clean with weekly (if not daily) maintenance. While our pets may be cute to look at and fun to play with, they often leave fur, feathers, and dandruff in their wake. To keep yourself (and your animals) healthy and happy, prioritizing the cleanliness of your apartment is essential. Vacuuming, dusting, and sweeping will likely be a common chore when you bring pets into your indoor living space, so be prepared for it! Finally, if you choose to have a cat or dog, make time to potty train them so accidents don’t happen at home.

A Place of Their Own

As much as we love our pets, we can’t be with them all the time. Giving your pet a place of their own (such as a cozy crate or cat tree) allows them to have a “safe spot” in the apartment when they need time to themselves, or to pass the day while you’re at work. This dedicated space can give them a place to relax comfortably while you are busy taking care of household chores, and can even act as a stress free area for pets that become anxious during thunderstorms or around fireworks.

Keep Them Active

A tired pet is usually a happy one. All animals need mental and physical stimulation to keep them well-balanced and easy to work with; without it, they can become reckless, hyperactive, and difficult to control. In fact, many pets (and dogs especially) will begin to destroy your apartment and possessions without productive ways to channel their energy, so be sure to find time before or after work to give them the attention they need. As a pet owner without a yard, you’ll likely spend lots of time on walks or playing with your pet indoors to keep them active. If you have a dog, take them for errands with you to pet-friendly places to give them extra stimulation.

Living with your pet doesn’t have to be difficult or stressful, in fact, it can be extremely fun for both of you. Finding pet friendly apartments is the first step to an easy life together; once you move in, be sure to vacuum and clean regularly so that your indoor air quality doesn’t suffer from your new pet. In addition to regularly cleaning and vacuuming, you will have to also make sure your pet gets adequate exercise and mental stimulation with fun indoor games and walks. If you find ways to balance all of these new tasks, you can be sure that you and your pet will enjoy your time together in any apartment.
