Charles County public schools resume classes on September 4th, and teachers go back on August 27th. As much as we want to deny it, summer can’t last forever. If your summer daze still hasn’t led you to think about school time, take some time to read our list of back to school tips. They will ensure you and your kids start the school year off on the right foot.
Tip #1: Finish buying school supplies for your children.
Stores are guaranteed to be packed the weekend leading up to the 4th. To avoid line and supply shortages, beat out the crowds by getting your shopping done early. Let your kids have a little fun picking out their supplies. Any reason to get them excited about returning to school is worth spending a few extra bucks.
Tip #2: Talk to your children about bullying.
No one wants their child to be bullied or to bully others. To prevent both of these scenarios, explain to your children what bullying behavior is and the negative effect it has on others. You can even do some roleplaying to equip with the right language to use in a bullying context. Empower them by giving them resources they can turn to in the event of a bad situation and suggestions on how to build their own self-confidence. Once the school year begins, check in weekly to see how they are doing with bully prevention.
Tip #3: Establish a morning routine.
If you had a routine last year, evaluate what went well and how your family can improve. If you never had a routine, begin to decide who will take care of breakfast and what time the kids will need to get up. Then do a trial run during the days leading up to the first day of school. Planning ahead of time will prevent stress as the important date approaches.
Tip #4: Make a growth plan.
Ask your children what they hope to get out of this school year. Summarize their goals into a few key points and think critically about how they can accomplish these goals. For example, a kid who wants to try out for the soccer team during the spring should talk to the coach and start building running endurance during the fall. By devising a plan and setting actionable goals, your kids will feel better equipped to start the school year off on the right foot.
