March is Women’s History Month! What started as a local celebration of Women’s History Week in Santa Rosa, California, back in 1978, is now a month-long celebration. This year’s theme, selected annually by The National Women’s History Alliance, is “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.” There are many different ways to celebrate Women’s History Month. If you aren’t sure where to begin, check out some of these ideas.
Educate Yourself
While it’s 2022, women still face inequalities. For instance, in 2020, women earned 84% of what their male counterparts earned. This means that a woman would have to work 42 additional days to make what men make! From the wage gap and stereotypes to problems like domestic violence, women face many challenges simply because of their gender. Educating yourself and those around you is one way to bring awareness to these issues.
Support Women-Owned Businesses
One of the best ways to support women is shopping at women-owned businesses! If you know of any in your area or online, consider purchasing something from them. Rather than shop at places like Amazon, check out online shops through Etsy or visit local shops and restaurants.
Thank the Women in Your Life
While this seems simple, thanking a woman who has shaped you is another way to show your support during Women’s History Month. Consider your coworkers, your friends, and your family members. A simple “thank you” means the world! At work, write thank you cards or make an announcement recognizing women in the workplace. Call your mother, grandmother, aunts, or sisters. Show your support and let them know you’re proud to know them!
Listen to a Women-Empowering Podcast
During Women’s History Month, consider listening to a women-led podcast to show your support! From pop culture to relationship advice and more, there are plenty of women-led podcasts that provide you with everything from news to life advice. Find the best podcast for you! Who knows, maybe you’ll find your new favorite.
Visit the National Mall for a Unique Experience
Through May 27th, head to the National Mall to see a variety of bright orange, life-sized statues! These statues will depict a woman that works in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Each statue will feature a QR code that you can scan to learn more about the particular woman’s contribution to the field. Be sure to plan your trip so you won’t miss this awesome exhibit!
While we should celebrate all the amazing things women do year-round, we should specifically do so during Women’s History Month. Plan out how you will celebrate Women’s History Month with these ways to show your support!
