Hurray, it’s fall! Fall is arguably the best time to be fashionable. As much as you hate to see the endless sunshine fade or put your summer outfits away, you won’t need those sundresses and tank tops for a while. So it’s time to store away the summer clothes and transition your closet for the fall season.

Here are five ways to successfully transition your closet to fall:

1. Start With a Plan

Before you start transitioning, have a plan. Transitioning without a plan can get overwhelming. If you start shopping before you evaluate what you have and what you need, it can get confusing, expensive, and time-consuming. Therefore, having a plan for your fall closet doesn’t only boost your creativity in getting new clothing pieces but also reduces your stress and makes you enjoy your shopping process.

2. Clean Out Your Closet and Donate Clothes You Haven’t Worn in a While

Doing a closet cleanout is one of the processes of transitioning your closet. Take out all the clothes and accessories in your closet for a cleanup. Doing this enables you to evaluate your clothes and determine whether you can continue to wear them or if you should donate them. Before arranging them back into your closet, assess the last time you wore certain clothing items to evaluate whether you should keep, donate, or trash them. If an item isn’t worth keeping or giving out, toss it. This makes room in your closet as we transition seasons.

3. Purchase Storage Bins to Transfer Summer Clothes To Storage to Make Room for Fall Clothing

You may think it’s a good idea to store your summer clothes in cardboard boxes or plastic bags; however, these options could ruin your clothes in the long run. Neither will protect your clothes from moisture, insects, and dust. To properly store your summer clothes, purchase storage bins with airtight lids. You can put the storage bin under your bed or in your closet. Putting summer clothes in storage bins during the fall also provides extra room in your closet for fall clothes.

4. Repurpose Summer Clothes for Fall and Think About Layering

Before you rush to shop for fall clothes, check out what is in your closet to see what summer style you can repurpose for fall.

Fall is one of the best seasons for fashion because the cool weather creates the perfect opportunity for layering. Having a selection of summer clothes with the addition of a cardigan/sweater, jacket, or scarf is the ideal way to transition your closet.

For example, if you have a tank top, you can pair it with a cardigan or sweater, or to a sundress, you could add a turtleneck and tights, or to a skirt, a pair of leggings or tights and some flats or riding boots. These repurposed outfits make a great fall look.

5. If You’re Going Shopping, Purchase Quality Staples That Will Last for Years

The key to a perfect transition is the staples in your closet. You cannot do without them because they serve as the building blocks or statement pieces upon which you build your outfits.

Shopping for staples is essential; however, we recommend buying quality staples that will not only be useful and freshen up your closet but will also last for years. Fall staples to incorporate in your closet include some nice pair of jeans, a quality pair of boots, a sweater and coats, oversized blazers, knitwear, etc. These staples give you classic or chic styles that can be mixed or matched and enjoyed for years.
