Interested in marine history, animals, or prehistoric times? If so, you should make plans to visit the Calvert Marine Museum, a family-friendly spot located in Solomons, Maryland and only a short drive away from Adams Crossing Apartments. Pack up your family or a group of neighbors and head to Solomons for day full of marine exploration!

Activities at Calvert Marine Museum

Calvert Marine Museum has something for everyone. For those interested in arts and crafts, the museum has a woodcarving shop where visitors can watch skilled artisans create boat models, trailboards, and other beautiful carvings. This is a must-see for all collectors and lovers of boat-related trinkets.

Additionally, the museum created the Estuarine Biology Gallery for animal lovers. Here, you’ll find a unique display of the wildlife that inhabits the Chesapeake Bay. The exhibit’s three sections showcase three different habitats:

  • Deep Open Water – Boasts chain dogfish, small sharks, and several species of sport fish
  • Sheltering Shallows – Including seahorses and water snakes
  • Tidal Tributaries – Home to turtles, bluegill sunfish, and black crappie. This part of the museum holds even more surprises, all of which are best received in person.

The museum also has a Paleontology Gallery and a Maritime History Gallery. In the Paleontology Gallery, you’ll find a prehistoric timeline that provides context for the Calvert Cliffs fossils. You’ll also see all the fossils collected from the area. Then, you can watch videos that explain the slow and careful way in which excavators extracted and prepared the fossils for exhibition. The Maritime History Galley tells the story of human habitation of the Southern Maryland region beginning with the Pawtuxunt Indians and ending with current recreational fishing.

Visiting the Museum

You can visit the museum any day from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Further, if you make a whole day trip out of your visit, you can bring food with you and have a picnic on museum grounds or stop in at any of the good restaurants located nearby. Admission costs $9 for adults, $4 for children ages 5 to 12, and free for children under 5. They also offer military and senior citizen discounts. We hope you decide to make Calvert Marine Museum part of your summer plans!
