Since National Doctor’s Day is March 30th, we thought this was the perfect time to remind you why scheduling doctors’ appointments on a regular basis is important.
What Is National Doctor’s Day?
National Doctor’s Day is a holiday that honors physicians for the work they do for their patients, communities, and for society as a whole. The U.S. celebrates it on March 30th each year. The holiday was first celebrated on that day in 1933 in Winder, Georgia. This first observance included a formal dinner and acts of gratitude and recognition of the contributions of living doctors. It also included remembrances of those who had passed away. Doctor’s Day was the brainchild of Eugena Brown Almond, the wife of a physician, who decided there should be a special day to honor physicians.
On March 30th, 1958, the United States House of Representatives passed a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day. Then in 1990, legislation to establish a national Doctor’s Day on March 30th was overwhelmingly approved by the House and U.S. Senate. It was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush.
Why Scheduling Doctors’ Appointments Is Important
There are many reasons why it’s a good idea to schedule doctors’ appointments on a regular basis and not just when you’re sick. Here are four of the most important reasons:
1) Catch Problems Early
One of the main reasons that doctors encourage their patients to have regular checkups is because it allows them to catch problems early. This can often help before they progress too far or become more serious. Additionally, it can greatly improve your chances for recovery and a positive outcome.
2) Get a Baseline
When your doctor sees you when you’re sick, his or her main goal is to treat the illness so you can get better. But your doctor also needs to see you when you’re healthy to get a baseline of how your body behaves normally. For example, they need to know what your normal blood pressure is, not your blood pressure when you’re sick because blood pressure tends to be higher when your body is experiencing stress from illness or pain.
3) Focus on Wellness and Prevention
When you see your doctor when you are healthy, they can spend more time with you and provide you with advice on developing a wellness plan to stay healthy. This helps to prevent problems before they occur.
4) Build a Good Relationship
When you see your doctor on a regular basis, you get to know each other. You learn to trust them. They become familiar with you and your health needs, as well as your medical and family history, and risk factors. All this helps them to better serve you and take care of your health care needs.
If You’re New to Scheduling Doctors’ Appointments
To get the most out of your doctors’ visits, it’s best to be prepared. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a handy checklist with information on what you should do prior to your appointments if you want to check it out. And while you’re at your next doctor’s visit, remember to thank your doctor for what they do, especially if you’ll see them between now and National Doctor’s Day.
