Have you ever felt like you needed to make some changes in your day-to-day life but weren’t sure where to start? Now’s your time. September is Self Improvement Month! There’s truly no better time to evaluate your daily habits and find room to make small personal improvements. The purpose of this month is to simply assess how satisfied you are with yourself and consider ways you might be able to improve your physical and mental health for future happiness. Set Goals and Write Them Down

When it comes to self-improvement, it’s important to think about exactly what you want to improve. For example, do you want to work out 3 times a week? Or, perhaps you want to read for 30 minutes every day. No matter what you want to do, make sure that it is measurable and write it down. Ensuring you can measure your progress is a great way to track your overall improvement, and writing it down holds you to it. Post your written goal in a place that matches the goal’s intent. For example, if your goal is to floss every day, post the goal on your bathroom mirror. Or, if you strive to eat a serving of fruits or vegetables at every meal, stick the written goal on your refrigerator.

Develop an Exercise Routine

It takes 2 months for a new behavior to become automatic, so it’s important to build a routine and stick to it until you reach this point. With that being said, try to develop a weekly exercise routine! Whether you walk for 20 minutes before work or go to 3 workout classes a week, it can help you create consistency and plan a week in advance so that you know what other competing priorities may interfere with your exercise regiment and adjust accordingly. Furthermore, if you find yourself bored with your workouts, try to switch it up! Alternate between an outdoor jog and a trip to the gym to keep things interesting. Pick Up a New Hobby

It’s easy to fall into the swing of working, spending time with family and friends, and repeating. When was the last time you tried something new? Perhaps now is the time you can pick up a new hobby. Go to a cooking class, sign up for a spin class, or begin crafting! Is there anything you’ve had the slightest interest in? Give it a try! It’s important to step out of your comfort zone every once in a while, not only to keep life fun but for your own personal growth. That thing you’ve always want to try? Just do it!

Cut the Negative

When it comes to self-improvement, it’s important to eliminate the negative factors. Negative people, negative self-talk, and activities that no longer serve you can all be holding you back from your true potential. If a friend in your life isn’t supporting you or helping you grow, perhaps you should take a step back from that friendship. Another problem that many people don’t even realize they have is negative self-talk. That’s the voice in your head that says, “I can’t do this,” or “I’ve messed this up.” Next time you catch yourself thinking that way, try to reframe your thoughts in a motivational way. Instead of saying, “I’ve messed this up,” think, “That didn’t go right this time around, but I’ve learned how I can approach it differently in the future.” Negativity can impact you in more ways than you think, whether it’s from an external or internal source.

Minimize Screen Time

In a world where we have access to technology at our fingertips, it’s seemingly impossible to escape. Many people spend the day working at a computer, only to come home and watch television or scroll through social media. While it’s not plausible to eliminate screentime, perhaps you can try to cut back a little bit on your daily consumption. Instead of coming home and watching TV, you can go outside for a walk or simply sit outside to enjoy some fresh air. Another activity you can try instead of TV and social media is reading! Take 15 minutes to read a book, a magazine, or the newspaper. The smallest steps will be helpful to cut back a little on screen time.

Remember…Self-Improvement Doesn’t Happen Overnight!

All in all, it’s important to recognize that these tips and tricks aren’t going to happen overnight, and they aren’t supposed to! That’s the glory of self-improvement. You need to do what works best for you and what you want to get out of your life. Remember, there will be days that you might fall out of your routine, and that’s okay! As long as you take the steps you need for your own personal reasons, that’s enough. With these tips to become a better you, you can properly celebrate Self Improvement Month.
