Why Should You Buy Local?
Buying and eating locally grown foods is beneficial to you, the local economy, as well as the planet! By purchasing locally, it takes less energy and distance to transport the products. Not only does this mean fresh foods for you, but you are also reducing your carbon footprint in the process. Furthermore, buying local stimulates your local economy by supporting independent family farms.
From July 20th to the 28th, Southern Maryland residents can participate in the Buy Local Challenge. According to the Southern Maryland Buy Local Challenge website, if every house purchased $12 of local farm products for 8 weeks, local farmers would receive over $200 million.
Where to Buy Local Foods
Local foods are available for purchase at farm stands, farmers’ markets, wineries, and local farms, in addition to select grocery stores. Consider asking grocery store workers where their produce is from. If more people ask for local products, grocers will be incentivized to stock more local goods. Some establishments in the region who support farmers, as well as the local agricultural community, are Southern Maryland Meats and the Maryland Farmers Market Association. For information on other Agricultural Marketing Professionals in the Southern Maryland area, visit the Buy Local Challenge website.
Take the Challenge, Join the Celebration
